General Information

Film Studies is an interdisciplinary field drawing on the study of the history of art, national cultures and literatures, literary theory, philosophy, sociology, and other areas. Film Studies offers a combined PH.D. with a number of other departments and programs, currently including African American Studies, American Studies, Comparative Literature, East Asian Languages and Literatures, French, German, History of Art, Italian, and Slavic Languages and Literatures. In addition to acquiring a firm grounding in the methods and core material of both film studies and another discipline, the candidate is advised to coordinate a plan of study involving comprehensive knowledge of one or more areas of specialization. Such areas include:

  1. Historiography, including archival history, history of technology, early cinema.
  2. Aesthetics: theories of the image, adaptation, philosophy, avant-garde film.
  3. European film: British, French, German, Italian, Slavic.
  4. American culture: Hollywood, independent film, African American cinema.
  5. World film: global image exchange; cinema in Asia, Latin America, and Africa.
  6. Documentary as an aesthetic, cultural, and ideological practice.

Through course work, examinations, and the dissertation, the candidate links a film specialty with material and methods coming from the participating discipline. Directors of graduate studies from both programs monitor the candidate’s plans and progress.

Yale also has pretty generous

Yale also has pretty generous financial aid, so thats another big plus. Besides Oliver Stone, Jodie Foster and John Badham, and Elia Kazan also went there. you can't discount Yale becuase people don't talk about it. Its a great school and you will get out of it what you put in. They have a great atmosphere there too, people like working together and appreciate eachother.

Ok, Yale has a great name,

Ok, Yale has a great name, but to be honest, the film dept is not the greatest. They have an amazing liberal arts program there, obviously, since its Yale, and the Drama facilities are second to none, but the film program is never really mentioned when you are talking about the best film schools to go to. There have been a lot of successful actors who went there, and so did Oliver Stone, so that says something, but honestly, there is a reason why there are other far better schools to learn film at, even though Yale is so prestigious.

Anyone been here?

Hey, I am looking for people who have gone here/ are going here for their MFA in any of the programs/ specially filmmaking. I am thinking of applying here for the MFA fimmaking program, but want to get some real feedback from people. Have you been able to get into the indusry with the name of the school on your resume? Does it even matter do you think? What is the schedule like? How are the faculty in terms of their availability, willingness to help, etc?

Thanks a lot for your help!
